Dendrobium violaceoflavens grows near sea level in Western New Guinea (Irian Jaya) but also located in Southern New Guinea.
Plants are usually found on tall trees, and occasionally on rocks with plenty of light and humidity.
This plant can grow from 150 - 200cm and can have 10-20 flowers on a long stem.
More recently they have been used in breeding to intensify the labellum in progeny.

Ideal conditions are
- medium to high filtered light,
- warm to hot locations
- in a well drained mix that dries before it is watered again.
They can be grown on a mount.
